The 2017 Women’s March that took place January 21 proved that citizens around the world were a force to be reckoned with. The Women’s March on Washington and its Sister Marches, such as the one that took place on the Austin Capital, was a worldwide protest in the support of civil rights including women’s rights, immigration reform, healthcare rights, environmental protection reform, freedom of religion, racial justice, worker’s rights, and equality of human rights for the LGBTQ community.
The march took place the day after President Trump’s inauguration in association with the other marches across the country and world. Austin residents played their part in the 2017 Women’s March, drawing in 50,000 participants- the largest protest in Texas history. The people assembled at the Texas State Capitol to fight for equality of human rights, environmental protection, safety, and healthcare reform.
Witnesses of the historic march claimed the streets of the Capitol were so packed that many Austin residents chose to stand on the sidewalks to cheer on fellow marchers. It took the protestors two hours to march the one-mile loop. There were many notable speakers including State Sen. Wendy Davis, Lizzie Velasquez, Mustafa Tameez, and Sherly Cole. Austin residents were also entertained with performances from Tameca Jones, Gina Chavez, and many more.
