Austin, Texas is a place like no other. There are so many notable features about this capital that make it an appealing outlier to most cities. In case you aren’t familiar with all of the fun facts, here are a few to get you pumped before moving to Austin.
Fact #1: If you are moving to Austin but are disenchanted at the thought of not being exposed to wildlife, note that you don’t have to choose between the two. Austin is the number one urban bat colony in North America. There are up to 1.5 million bats hanging around during the appropriate season for you to spectate. If you are intrigued by these night-dwelling mammals, then you can add bat-hunting to your bucket list.
Fact #2: Leslie Cochran is somewhat of a celebrity in Austin. He is a homeless cross dresser, who has gained quite some recognition by fellow city-dwellers throughout the years. He ran for mayor three times since 2003. He recently passed away.
Fact #3: The actual mayor of Austin, Lee Leffingwell, honored Leslie’s death by asserting that March 8th is “Leslie Day.” The city of Austin may be quirkier than you think!
Fact #4: Robert Plant, the lead singer and songwriter of the band Led Zeppelin, owns a house in Austin, Texas. In fact, you can catch a sight of him in the Whole Foods on Lamar and 5th, and he will most likely be trying to bargain the price of cheese.
Fact #5: After moving to Austin, you will quickly find out that the Whole Foods on Lamar and 5th is no ordinary grocery store. It contains a wine bar, restaurants lined up, a clothing shopping area, and even a chocolate fountain.
