Austin Local Movers – 512-443-3700

Austin residents: if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary to do in your city, the movers at All My Sons recommend you check out the must see attraction in Austin, the Cathedral of Junk on Lareina Drive.

The Cathedral of Junk is exactly what it sounds like: a tall tower covered in random junk. This unique attraction in Austin stands proud in its creator and Austin resident, Vince Hannemann’s backyard; and although it is invisible from the street, it contains approximately six tons of junk around a hollow framework. Its building began in 1988, with every imaginable item going into the creation –  wheels, kitchen utensils, ladders, bicycle parts, car parts, dolls, toys, bells, and signs.

Hannemann says that many people search for a more profound meaning behind his creation, but he claims, “I just did it because it was kind of cool”.

The Cathedral of Junk is a living sculpture that is constantly changing and rearranging, as the creator has been steadily adding to it since its early days. He even allows visitors to provide him with objects to add to it.

If you visit the cathedral, it may look small on the outside but don’t be fooled – it has multiple levels and an observation platform. There’s even a “throne room”, where owner Vince Hannemann sits on his couch. The Cathedral lights up with beer signs, clocks, and illuminated signs powered by hidden cables. Hannemann says he tried to tear it down once, but he couldn’t go through with it.

The Austin movers at All My Sons consider this unique creation a must-see attraction in Austin!

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter recently announced the Department of Defense will be establishing a hub in Austin Texas to address its security challenges. The goal of this hub, called Defense Innovation Unit Experimental, or DIUx is to reestablish a strong connection between the Pentagon and the ever- changing American technological community to face advancing security threats. Ash Carter, the DOD and the Pentagon all recognize the development and the value in America’s innovative technology community, and how critical it is to building new strategies for the Pentagon and Military to incorporate. Austin movers say the goal of the DOD is for DIUx hub in Austin to establish working connections with these technology community members.

The new DIUx hub in Austin will be the third hub nationwide, with two others existing in Silicon Valley and Boston.

Ash Carter’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Afghanistan Christy Abizaid will be running the new DIUx hub in Austin, with the help of DIUx managing partner Raj Shah. The facility will be assisted by National Guard Members and reservists. The expansion of DIUx in Austin is partly in consideration to the Reservists in which Carter trusts and claims “…many of these patriots are tech industry leaders when they’re not on duty”.

Ash Carter has expressed his confidence in the city of Austin’s ability to combine its knowledgeable recent graduates with its scientific and technological innovations to promote technological advances for the Department of Defense.

Austin movers say the state of Texas is home to a fair percentage of the nation’s military, their families, and military veterans. With a growing population and bases all over the state, Carter believes the institutions and military ties in Austin will add to strengthen the technological bond with the Pentagon.

Based off the success of the new DIUx hub in Austin, the DOD has expressed plans to build similar hubs nationwide.
